One of Marshall's landmark Victorian homes, Three
Oaks was built by Paul Goodwin Whaley, a prominent local businessman, in
1895. It reflects the grand opulent era of the Victorian Age, as tastes
shifted from clutter towards elegance. All of our original leaded glass
transoms and windows are in place, and the woodwork and floors remain
unpainted, finished in a dark glowing patina of cared for antiquity.
Located
one-half block from the restored historic T&P Depot with the Texas &
Pacific Railroad Museum and the beautiful Ginocchio Hotel, you can watch
the trains while you rock or swing on the porch. Also, within a short
walking distance is the historic Courthouse and museum, the Michelson
Museum of Art, restaurants, pottery, antique, and craft shops in
downtown Marshall. Just across the street is the beautiful and
interesting Allen House, owned by the Conservation Society and available
for group tours.
This magnificent 24 room structure
highlights original leaded glass transoms, seven hand carved fireplace mantels,
egg and dart trim, beamed ceilings, cut glass French doors, polished wood
columns, oak and heart pine flooring.
The home is embellished with period antiques, including both American Victorian
and Eastlake that came up the Red River by steamboat.
You
may choose to enjoy the inviting porch, play either the antique square grand
piano or the pump organ in the parlor or you might like to just relax under one
of the three surviving Burr Oak trees grown from acorns brought from the Old
Country.
If you are coming for business, Three Oaks is only a few blocks from both the
County Courthouse and the Federal Courthouse. With our family living upstairs,
you have complete privacy downstairs.
Amtrak arrives in Marshall twice daily and is an enjoyable way to travel. If you
are arriving by train, you may arrange to have Enterprise Car Rental
(800-325-8007) deliver and pick up your car at Three Oaks.
Three Oaks is only 15 miles from
mysterious Caddo Lake (Steamboat tours available) and historic Jefferson.
Shreveport's Gambling Boats and Louisiana Downs Racetrack are only 40 minutes
away. You might enjoy a performance at the Marshall Civic Center, Champion
Barrel Racing at Josey Ranch, an event at the City Arena, one of our great
festivals or golf at the municipal golf course.
